What is the unspoken story that is trying to find voice
What is the unspoken story that is trying to find voice when people knowingly and wilfully elect a convicted criminal, racist, rapist, misogynist and likely pedophile to be the supposed leader of the supposed free world?
I say supposed leader because our political system is more like a mafia than a democracy and I do not believe elected officials are anything but spokespeople for those who have purchased their voice.
And supposed leader of the free world, because that little illusion is fracturing in broad daylight. No to free, and no to leading. The USA is a failed state in lag.
As I was listening to the anguish of a friend yesterday, my own gut roiling with sickness, I heard reflected the cries of anguish of the people who voted for a criminal hate propagandist.
As Clare Graves said, people cannot be until they are. A cry for help is a cry for help. And when our perspectives are limited by economics, education, and decades of being erased and ignored, not matter our colour or caste, the pain is real. When we have been sold a story all of our lives about our superiority of gender, nationality and skin colour, and we see what we have been told is our rights being eroded, we cry for help.
The status quo that was represented in full bloom by the Democrats was too painful for those people who know nothing else but their exceptionalism. So they chose revolt. Revolting as it may be.
There is a story under this that must be attended to with great urgency. After the sickening rollercoaster of the last few decades, with the global rise of right-wing fascism, those of us who long for all-human-dignity must heed the cries of those who do not know anything else but to violently reject any status quo, and in so doing embrace more bigotry, racism and hate. They know not that they are reaching out in desperation to the arsonist to help put out the fire.
What is the story that says hate, racism and misogyny are acceptable, or worse, normal?
What is the source of this small, insecure, fear-based worldview? And how are we, those who call for a more beautiful world, every day, supporting its perpetuation?
There is no one simple solution. It is not an easy or trite question.
But it is a question that must be considered deeply and passionately, compassionately…if we want a world with a future for Earth and all her children.
Shall we explore that question together?
