Thought whiplash

We are smoothly sailing through life, our thoughts and beliefs on even keel. Comfort lives here. With comfort comes an early edge of satisfaction. And with satisfaction the seeds of entitlement can take root.

Entitlement is the close cousin of superiority. I am entitled because I am superior in some way. This little atrocity of being creeps in so stealthily, we do not notice.

Then boom, someone says something that has us stop in our tracks.

The ice- bucket-over-head equivalent thought whiplash.

A perspective we had not considered. A rejection of something we hold dear.

A scream spoken in a silent look that penetrates our happy, safe space.

An event that we did not predict.

The rent in the fabric of our life is deep and irreparable.

Change has arrived.

We all need to be charged with a thought whiplash, even if we do not agree with it.

For the stimulus gets us to wake up enough to take our questions deeper, breaking the hold of entitlement and superiority.

And deeper questions are the source of wisdom.
