They are animals
I was listening again to this remarkable response from Gabor Mate and a woman in his audience, recorded late in 2024. This time, though, I listened to the extended version.
Take away the subject matter, which is a horrific subject matter, and we have two people from similar backgrounds who have opposing points of view.
Based on the willingness to have an open mind and heart.
And
To commit to exploring, seeking, and searching for the truth, even if that truth contradicts the truth we are holding so dearly.
This really is it, is it not?
Are we able to keep our hearts and minds open to the possibility that our precious truth and worldview might be wrong?
Are we able to inquire, seek to understand, and remain open?
The disease of close-mindedness, or squeezing out any possibility that there are other truths, is fundamentalism. The same disease we might rail against if our ‘enemies.’
The practice, daily, hourly, moment by moment, of challenging our truths, noticing our closed and contracted heart, and opening it, at least a little, is the practice of compassion and humility.
It is hard to do. If you are like me, the sweet addiction to righteousness and superiority of truth is difficult to give up.
But that is our practice if we want a more beautiful, kind and compassionate world. To unhook the tentacles of superiority in every moment.
The warning signs of not doing this are to use language like — they are animals — to wish for the death of others — and to long for the dehumanising cruelty that is tsunami-ing our world today.
The Dare to Care workshop is where we learn these skills and embed this type of practice. Registration is open for the next workshop in February. https://syntropic.world/dare-to-care/
