There is no scarcity of love

I know this now.

For much of my life, I believed love was scarce.

And from that worldview, I searched for it, rather than see it everywhere.

This perspective, of course, of the scarcity of love, is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I remember being out for a run with the boys one day, listening to their banter, and realising that they were speaking boy talk, yet really there was love in the context. Love for the run, being together, and the ease of conversation.

I began to see and experience love all around me.

The way the plants turn to face the light. The touch of a hand offered in support. The fierce actions of someone seeking justice for others.

The play of the dolphins.

The alchemy that imbues good food, prepared by someone who cares.

Love is the context, the interdependency of life on life. It is the metaphysical weightless invisible gravity that holds life together.

If we pause for a moment, even when we feel most isolated and lost, we can feel love’s kiss in the breeze as it caresses our skin. The breeze whispering, like a lover, of how we and the breeze are one.

We can turn our face to the sun and allow warmth to infuse us.

Even as I sit and write these words in a cafe surrounded by strangers, you can hear love threading the conversations.

The exquisite irony is that to know love as life is a prerequisite to know love with another.

When we trip over the excitement of life and love each day, we allow love to sweep us up in its delicious embrace. The kind of love that has roots going all the way to the centre of the Earth, all the way to the stars.

It took me five decades to arrive here. To know that love is the field waiting for us to step fully in.
