The price of progress
Is it really progress if the effect is entropic?
The Arctic temperatures are breaking records for heat. The ocean is on fire. Madagascar is starving. Thousands of turtles in Sri Lanka have been found dead. An apartment building collapses in the wealthiest country on earth. British Columbia and Washington State are suffering under a ‘heat dome.’
But progress! GDP growth must continue if we want to keep the wheels on the bus turning.
Maybe we need to stop? Maybe if we want to speed up as a civilised humanity we need to slow down as a greedy growth addicted humanity?
Maybe we need to replace the clowns posturing as politicians working for the good of all when they are working for the good of those who pay the most to their re-election/retirement/post political opportunity fund?
Maybe we just need to stop? COVID tried to do that for us.
But the wheels of the bus must keep turning. Or so we are told.
As Stephanie Kelton has said so well in her book, The Deficit Myth, perhaps we have been told a giant furphy about how money really works.
Perhaps we might stop long enough to think through better solutions for earth and all her creatures.
At what point do we call enough enough?
At what point do we each stop and call time on our own rabid consummation, the diseases of Wetiko far more deadly to a future than anything we have seen.
*Wetiko is an Algonquin word for a cannibalistic spirit that is driven by greed, excess, and selfish consumption (in Ojibwa it is windigo, wintiko in Powhatan).
