ropThe difficult work of changing a cultural inequity
Inequities are everywhere. Gender, race, wealth/poverty, education, ability, sexual orientation..to name a few.
Today I want to speak about gender inequity.
We have lived for a long time in a patriarchal society. The female voice and rights are seen as lesser or even irrelevant.
Change requires work from all genders. The male must learn that the female is equal and different. Their voice and their rights are as significant as theirs in all domains.
The female must learn to speak up, not in a demeaning or ridiculing way, rather with a clear voice free of attacking charge. They need to learn what grooming, control and gaslighting are through this cultural change to know when they have been caught in its grip.
Mothers must raise their sons to contribute to all elements of domestic life — cleaning, cooking child care as well as the traditional male roles. Female children must be taught the male ‘fixing’ things tasks. Fathers must model both their contribution to domestic life and the expression of equality towards the females. Respect for all is the ground.
All forms of violence from either the male or female towards the other needs to be named and seen for what it is, without exception.
Power does not give more rights to gender control or inequity. Healthy power encourages more respect and invitation to those without power — at the least wholehearted listening.
We have a long way to go. This is not just about pointing out bad male behaviour. Women must own their contribution. They need to learn self-defense both physically and emotionally. Men need to see their entitled position that they might never have recognised before.
Speaking with malice is not gender exclusive.
Change requires all of us.
