Safe Uncertainty
The world is uncertain. From the direction of the wind to the length of our lives, we cannot know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
The desire for neat, scripted lives, where tomorrow looks similar to today, can be compelling, yet is ultimately going to end with unmet expectations and the pain and frustration that comes with that.
Safe uncertainty is possible. A structure or container that enables a level of consistency — be that response and support from people, a morning routine, clear boundaries, or habits and disciplines that provide anchor points — also gives us room to be creative, responsive, innovative and emergent.
It is a dance. Not too loose, not too tight.
While 100% safety is never assured, we can become comfortable with living on the edge of emergence.
At times, as we travel through the storms of life, we might need higher degrees of safety. Other times we have the fortitude for risk. Safe uncertainty is an adaptive process, an attunement to the field that supports our whole selves to come out to play.
