Rightfully relegated to a small place in the Universe

I was reading an article by a publication I admire, and they mentioned someone from my past. (Nearly thirty years ago)

This person fits a typical stereotype — white male, seen as super successful by certain people who value success through the lens of monetary and fame accumulation, one who rubs shoulders with others of similar ilk such as Tony Robbins and Donald Trump.

This person used his well-honed seduction skills to wrap me in his spell of whispers of lies wrapped in lies. I was young enough to be bamboozled by him. His marriage was over. He was single…blah, blah, blah. Lies.

When his wife called me, one of the many of his conquests on the very long list she had extracted from him, I was mortified. Betrayal is not my thing.

Some thirty years later, I have a higher degree of objectivity. I see him and his ilk with disdain. Their lives are built on lies and projections of success. They climb to their wealth off the backs of others without looking down at the carnage they leave. They care not about any of it except their glory.

I was considering this stereotype today in the light of the spectacular fall from grace of a once hero, an actual monster, Ben Roberts-Smith.

The fabulous series, Ted Lasso, has a character who represents them beautifully. Rupert, once married to Rebecca, is now the fictional owner of the West Ham Team.

This group of men are dinosaurs. They do not even know their time is up. Yet they sense it, as they fight tooth and nail against the tide of smarts that is engulfing them. They fight desperately to silence the younger people who know who they are.

The world will be better when their game is called for what it is. I can feel compassion, but I will not be sad when they are rightfully relegated to a small place in the Universe.
