Recalibrate

Home. A glorious fresh winter morning. 10 C. Blue blue skies. The pleasure of a Gold Coast Winter, where endless blue skies and the kiss of fresh air is a delight.

Allowing myself the pleasure of sleeping until I wake, a commitment to recalibrate to my time zone.

The sound of chatter in the coffee shop. The pleasure of my hot coffee perfectly brewed, a known regular.

My love beside me. Milly our dog waiting for the signal that we are departing.

The familiar. The comfort of the familiar, after 16 days of travel, adventure and constantly changing landscapes.

I scan the news. I read of the harassment of the marvellous Arundhati Roy in India by the Modi government. Her famous quote, Our strategy should be not only to confront empire, but to lay siege to it. To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness and our ability to tell our own stories, speaking to the urgency of our times.

All around, the seduction of empire, dressed as the saviour of those forgotten. The fractures and fault lines growing wider. A reset immanent.

The sun warms my face. Home and the familiar offer a sense of safety, a place to gather reserves to stand again for the all-human, all-life dignity that requires ongoing effort against empire and the empire state of mind.
