These last few weeks I have had to endure extraordinary pain from an infected tooth. One of those occasions that it happens, even though I get regular dental care, over the Christmas New Year holidays, when my dentist is also on holidays. Endurance was the order of the day.

Followed by the time in the dental chair to take step one of care. Definitely up there with the most painful experiences of my life.

Through all of this I was aware that even though I was experiencing very painful circumstances, I am lucky beyond measure.

Lucky to be born in a land where health care is available, lucky to be born into a family that educated me, a place without the threat of war, a place where our normal way of life is so privileged. Thankful that I could pay the dental fee without too much stress, something I know well from single motherhood.

Thankful that I managed to get my care without contracting COVID, which would have surely meant another week or more enduring pain. Thankful for all of those people who consider that others might need protection for various reasons unbeknown to them, and as such take actions to protect others.

Lucky to have the love I have as a constant. Lucky to know I get to go home from the painful experience and be held. Lucky that I have a roof over my head and food on the table.

Perhaps the benefit of living life as a single mother on the threshold of precarity for so long and then finding love and stability late in life is that I take nothing for granted. Every day, even those filled with pain, is a blessing.

I watch as people complain about such ridiculous things, like wearing a face mask, as if it will be the end of their life as they know it, as if it is a monstrous imposition on their god given freedom, and I wonder how we became so selfish and entitled.

I am grateful beyond measure. If my actions can gift another the ability to access much needed care, small impositions are worth it.
