Permission and affirmation
When we are in a process of change, making big decisions is scary.
Will I make the right choice? What if I do not and everything goes wrong?
The pressure and anxiety can be extreme.
In our desire not to be fully responsible for our decisions, we seek permission and affirmation from others.
Tell me what to do. Do you think this is right? In so doing, we are subjugating our authority to another.
Often we dress the permission question in such a way that the person we are seeking permission from does not understand they are being manipulated to say yes. We want to pass the responsibility to them so we can blame someone else if we make the wrong decision.
A more healthy way of making decisions is to speak to trusted advisors, listen to their thoughts and opinions, consider all options, factor in Kairos time, and when there is an absolute yes, say yes.
The decision is on us. We are responsible. We can live with that.
