Observing our triggers
We all have them. The soft squishy places that react when prodded.
Triggers manifest in different ways for everyone.
The sudden flare of temper. The visceral reflex. The withdrawal. The defensive stance. The satire. Even cruelty.
One moment we are a calm lake of emotional equilibrium, and the next possessed by a fierce reaction.
Emotional intelligence is the study and discipline of tempering our triggers.
To temper them we need to know them, see them.
Observing our triggers is a first step. Wow! My reaction and response to that was pretty heated. Why is that? What part of me is unreconciled, incomplete?
Bypassing triggers doesn’t work. Suppression, attempts at denial and ignoring them simply push down the trapped energy, which then accumulates over time to become a fester for future explosions.
Life is gorgeously annoying polarity. Our light is held in exquisite tension with our dark.
When we suppress or bypass the dark, we disqualify life.
Knowing our triggers we can regain sovereignty of their reflexive power over us. Then they become the beautiful edges that make us unique without doing too much damage to ourselves or others.
