I advocate for atonement. And forgiveness.
Every human makes mistakes. Mistakes are vital tools for learning and discernment.
If we make the same mistake twice, we are fools, for the lesson of the first mistake has not been taken.
If we make the same mistake three times, then we are beyond foolish; we are more likely to be arrogant and careless.
But to claim a faith, to speak of sin and justice, and then commit crime after crime, and then atone each week or each year, as if the deliberate choices to enact crimes could be washed away in a day, only to be resurrected and repeated the next day, is to debase the very idea of atonement.
There are too many people taking actions based on some perverted view of their faith, using their faith to erase, belittle, ostracise or exterminate people.
To worship a god who demands vengeance is to create a world of fear and blood. To worship a god who asks for love, acceptance, forgiveness, and compassion is to create a world where love is felt by all.
Atonement as a daily practice is healthy. But only when backed by a commitment to change and be the better person who seeks atonement.
