Getting started

Is often the hardest step. The weight of what we are starting all ahead of us.

Thinking about the size of the task or undertaking we are starting is a killer to starting at all.

As an experienced marathon and ultra-marathon runner, thinking about the 42 km’s ahead of me at the starting line fills me with a sense of impossibility.

Refuse to entertain this kind of thinking. Think only about the next step. And then the next. Keep moving. Enable precession to happen through movement consistently taken.

Focus on how the next step lands, how your body responds. The effect of the temperature. Adapt and adjust. Know the end point. Have the end point be the tension, like an invisible elastic band, that pulls you in a specific direction.

Keep taking the next step.

This is how to do anything that terrifies us in its enormity. One step at a time. Consistently. Adapting and adjusting in real time. Evolving our own capacity to complete the journey during the journey itself.

Building an enterprise, writing a book, running a marathon, becoming a Ph.D. graduate, changing the world.

Take the first step and trust the second step will be revealed only when the first step has been taken.
