Everyone is the other

Faraz Tahir. A young man who sought refuge in Australia. Remember and honour his name.

Now deceased. Doing his job. In the wrong place at the wrong time. Helping others escape a deranged man hell-bent on killing women. Only one year in Australia, a life in front of him.

There is a rotten aspect of humanity. The aspect that is xenophobic, racist and bigoted. Then there are the politicians who stoke fear and hatred because fear and hatred get more likes and hits in the media. There is the media who rush to announce an attack as this “name the most feared out-group” terrorism attack, or falsely accuse an innocent man of being the perpetrator.

All of them have or will have, blood on their hands.

The drama and righteousness hook is addictive. It feeds the need to be affirmed for hate.

Evil lives in all places, under all skins. Evil is sown by those who profess superiority to another group, no matter what the skin.

Those who were the first to cry false accusations, the first to spit at the other group, are the very ones whose actions over time create the context for a man trapped in a mental health breakdown to believe that some group of people need to be eliminated or suppressed.

The fear they express begets fear. And violence happens.

Politicians and journalists must be held accountable for seeding the flames of fear against the other.

For somewhere, not that far away, everyone is the other.

**I refuse to give labels to the various fears and others. The action of ‘othering’ happens everywhere. I am the other to someone. So are you.
