Elephants, surfing and staying young
Yesterday we met an elephant on the road. He clearly knew that if he stood on this road he would be fed many bananas. He was a happy elephant. (I was also a very happy human to have an elephant encounter like this, meeting him in his home, randomly.)
Just a bit further up the road was another elephant. He was an angry elephant. Do not feed. Avoid contact.
He was missing out on so much food because of his bad attitude.
Humans who are mature enough get to choose. Bad attitude, tough life. Live the victim, live at the effect of others.
In my limited experience of countries that are steeped in poverty, people are happy. The people in the favelas of Brazil where more generous than I experience in Western Countries. Sri Lankan people I have met so far are happy, kind and generous.
The little town we are staying in, Aragum Bay, is predominantly Tamil. It is a curiosity to see the contrast of girls in bikinis and women in burkas.
Yet I love the co-mingling. It says so much about what is possible when we respect each others choices.
We have just come out of the ocean after a two hour surf, starting before dawn. This was purposeful. We discovered that we have landed in the middle of party town. The afternoon surf is packed, mostly with beginners.
We might be the oldest tourists in town, certainly in the surf, and for once I am far better than most of the surfers. We are planning to do a lot of surfing.
I was thinking about Tom Cruise closing the Olympics with a stunt. I am Tom’s vintage. How great is it that he gets to do these things at age 62.
I plan to remain active, adventurous and young of heart until my last breath.
Finally, I am pinching myself to be here, drinking coffee, watching the waves, the smell of tuktuk diesel, sand between my toes, the heat manageable, my love beside me.
