Contemplations on security

Free from care, safe from danger or harm.

I live in a country where I am secure in the knowledge that statistically I am not likely to be shot. I am also secure in my knowing that if I was shot I could be taken care of at no cost. (Health care as a public service.) And that if I was shot, the country itself would care about how this could happen and do what it could to prevent further shooting incidents.

We cannot guarantee tomorrow. Most everything is outside of our control, particularly in the short term. The weather, a plague, the economy. We are at the effect of that.

To build security, which also means to build strong defences against the ravages of mental health stress which comes when security is absent, is to put in strong societal support structures. It also means that we as a collective consider long-term security as a human and natural right. This is to address climate breakdown as a priority.

Those who have wealth and access to power are not so concerned about social services or climate catastrophe. At least those whose mega-mansions are not oceanfront.

But those living in precocity are bolstered mentally and physically through knowing that they are safe from being shot, have access to health care and education and will be lifted up sufficiently should their income be decimated by unforeseen events.

Security is a whole system’s response. When the larger population feels secure violence of all forms diminishes.

Meanwhile, we continue to cultivate our own inner security. Our knowing that we are resourceful, that we are surrounded by people who care. That as a collective we can and will find a way. Community is as meaningful to a sense of security as anything.
