Constraints are the field of creativity

“Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work.” Gustave Flaubert

For so long I resisted self-discipline. I wanted freedom. I wanted to feel I could do anything I wanted, when I wanted.

When we understand adult development, we know this is a stage of development. An immature stage of growing up.

Freedom to do what you want when you want without consideration of its effects on others, on the future and on your life is akin to a present-moment tantrum. Mine! Now!

To everything, there is a side effect. Precession. Like it or not. A word spoken is never in isolation.

I learned that when I created strong boundaries around my life and health, when I got up in the dark and did my exercise, even in the cold and wet, I felt better for it.

I observed that when my day began and ended with structure, life opened up.

I then had the freedom to do whatever I wanted throughout the day, an ocean of creativity available to me.

Constraints are the field of creativity. To think otherwise is to be fooled.
