Bringing the joy back

Watching the uplift and enthusiasm of the changed political scene in the USA is a powerful reminder of the years of absent joy and fun.

Laughter. Some people are hell-bent on maligning it. But genuine laughter, a lightness of being unburdened by righteous superiority, is infectious.

I look, from my observer position on the underside of the world, at all the countries struggling with a semblance of democracy. It is heavy. Dark. Dangerous. The hate is extreme. Lies and corruption are the state of normal play. Even in my country, our opposition leader and his party read and act from the hate and darkness playbook.

I wonder — perhaps — just maybe — when integrity all the way up and down is the ground of leadership — when lies and corruption do not even enter the frame of the leader — when they cannot or will not be brought by the donor class that pulls the strings — when they are there for the people — in committed service to the people and a future of justice for all — I wonder if this enables a lightness of being wrapped in joy. I wonder if we can even bring fun and levity into the serious business of politics.

Now that I see it happening after years, decades of fear, hate and darkness, it is intoxicating.

Indeed, it is the single biggest transformation of the field no one ever imagined.

Against this backdrop, the haters and dark lords are floundering, dare I even say, lost. They have nothing but more hate, and we, the people, are so tired of that.

If ever there was a demonstration of love trumping hate we are witnessing it.
