At every moment we get to choose

I scroll the news feed on this beautiful midwinter morning. I wonder how my news feed differs from yours.

It never used to be this way. Siloed news is based on an algorithm that addicts us to keep scrolling.

My world becomes a chasm of difference between yours. Every day. Repeat.

And across this chasm, we seek to find common ground, ignoring the almost impossible scenario of doing so.

There must be something far greater than us, the individual “I”, to unite.

This is the powerful precession of the horror of war. It unites those who risk losing their freedom, even against religious or racial differences.

I am not advocating war. Yet in all my years working with the human condition, first in health care and then with change makers, the statistics keep telling their grisly tale. 80% of people refuse to change, even in the face of their death.

So what, I wonder, will bring us together across this increasing chasm of ideology?

In every conversation I have had with people, we have all expressed a core desire for many of the same things: safety, a warm home, opportunities for our children to grow up and flourish, dignity and choice, work that allows us to feel we matter, love and connection, and a sense of belonging.

I hold to be true that Syntropy, love, beauty, kindness and care are the greater forces than hate.

I also hold to be true that so much of what we read and experience in our news feeds and lives are the symptoms of something far deeper. That few address the source because the urgency of symptoms and the drama capture is more profitable.

We must understand the source. This requires time, attention, questions, perspective, and a willingness to change our minds.

At every moment we get to choose. Are we the ones joining the ranks of spreading fear and hate? Are we spending our days polishing the guard rails on the Titanic, or do we turn towards the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible and create that together?
